Getting started
First 30 minutes
From sign-in to your first saved research output in one session
The goal of the first session is not to explore every feature. It is to prove that one real legal workflow — question, research, draft output — lives inside 8rney from end to end.
Before you start#
- Choose one live legal question your team already needs answered.
- Prepare 1–3 source documents relevant to that question (a contract, a policy, a recent judgment).
- Decide who will own the pilot matter.
Session checklist#
Sign in
Sign in with your work email, Google, or Microsoft account. Your workspace is ready immediately — no setup required.
Create your first matter
Go to Matters and create a new matter. Give it a clear name that includes the client or issue — for example Acme / Supply Agreement Review or Employment Policy Update Q2.
Upload your source documents
Open the matter and upload your documents. PDFs, DOCX, and TXT files are all supported. Files are parsed, chunked, and made available to the AI within seconds.
Connect Google Drive (optional)
If your source material lives in Drive, go to Settings → Integrations and connect your Google account. Your Drive files will be available in research without re-uploading.
Run your first research question
Open the Research tab inside the matter (or click Research in the sidebar). Type your question, set the jurisdiction, and optionally mention your uploaded file with @filename. Submit and watch the activity feed as the AI works.
Review the output
Check the cited sources. Follow-up suggestions appear at the end of the response — click any to deepen the research. If the answer is ready to use, proceed to drafting.
Turn the research into a document
Click Draft from this on any research answer to open the Document editor with the research as context. Or go to Documents → New to start a fresh draft. Accept, reject, or revise every AI suggestion.
Save the output back to the matter
Save the document inside the matter so the research and the output stay linked and the team has one source of truth.
What success looks like after 30 minutes#
- One matter exists with a clear name and at least one uploaded source document.
- One research question has been answered with live citations.
- One document or note has been drafted and saved inside the matter.
- You can navigate back to the matter and find the research and the draft without any extra explanation.
Keep the scope tight on the first session. A completed narrow workflow is more valuable than a broad exploration that leaves nothing saved.
