Document editor

AI-assisted drafting, redlining, and revision inside a full rich-text editor

The Document editor is a full Tiptap-based rich-text editor with an AI layer built in. Use it to draft memos and contracts from scratch, redline existing documents, or revise a draft using AI suggestions — all without leaving the workspace.

Opening the editor#

  • From research: click Draft from this on any research answer to open the editor pre-loaded with that context.
  • From a matter: go to the Documents tab and click New document.
  • From the library: click any document to open it in the editor.

Drafting modes#

Use the AI mode panel on the right side of the editor to switch between:

ModeWhat it does
DraftGenerates a first-pass draft based on your instructions and any attached context
RedlineMarks up an existing document with tracked changes — additions, deletions, and suggested rewrites
SummariseProduces a concise summary of the document content
ExtractPulls out specific clauses, obligations, dates, or parties into a structured list

Writing a good draft prompt#

The quality of AI-generated drafts depends on the instructions you give. A strong prompt includes:

  • The document type ("NDA", "employment agreement", "demand notice")
  • The parties and their roles
  • Key commercial terms (duration, governing law, liability caps)
  • Any internal constraints ("must include our standard arbitration clause")
  • The tone ("formal", "plain English for a non-lawyer reader")

Canvas mode#

The Canvas split view shows your research or chat on the left and the live document on the right. Changes the AI suggests in the chat apply directly to the document. Use this for iterative drafting where you want to keep the reasoning visible while editing.

Redlining#

To redline a document:

  1. Upload the document into your matter or library.
  2. Open it in the editor.
  3. Select Redline mode from the AI panel.
  4. Describe what you want reviewed — "flag any clauses that deviate from market standard on governing law and dispute resolution" or "compare this against the playbook for our commercial template".

The AI returns marked changes with brief explanations. Accept or reject each change individually.

Auto-save#

Documents auto-save continuously. There is no manual save required. The last-saved state is always available in the matter's Documents tab.

Export#

Use the export button to download the document as:

  • DOCX — preserves formatting, ready for external sharing
  • PDF — formatted for distribution or filing
Note

AI-assisted drafting reduces the cost of first drafts and revision passes. Your team still owns the final text and the legal advice built on top of it. Every externally-facing draft should go through normal review before leaving the firm.
