How 8rney routes research queries across Indian courts, Indian Kanoon, India Code, and Canadian CanLII
8rney supports multi-jurisdiction legal research with dedicated database integrations for India and Canada. The jurisdiction selector in the research composer controls which sources are queried and which citation format is applied.
Available jurisdictions#
India#
8rney integrates two separate Indian legal sources:
Indian Kanoon — India's premier free legal database. Covers Supreme Court, all High Courts, and tribunal judgments. 8rney searches Indian Kanoon directly and displays results with the required Powered by Indian Kanoon attribution.
India Code — The official legislative repository of the Government of India. Covers all Central Acts, regulations, and notifications. Used for statutory queries and section-level citations.
When you select India as the jurisdiction, both sources are queried in parallel. Case law comes from Indian Kanoon; statutory text comes from India Code.
Canada#
CanLII — The Canadian Legal Information Institute database. Covers case law and legislation from all Canadian courts and legislatures, federal and provincial.
When you select Canada, the system routes queries to CanLII and applies Canadian citation format (neutral citation where available).
General / Multi-jurisdiction#
For questions that span jurisdictions or are grounded in international law, comparative law, or general legal principles, the system uses AI reasoning from training data. Outputs in this mode are flagged with a note that no live database search was performed and results should be independently verified.
How jurisdiction detection works#
If you do not set a jurisdiction manually, the system classifies your question by detecting jurisdiction signals in the text — names of courts, statute names, geographic references. You can always override this with the jurisdiction selector.
Citation formats#
| Jurisdiction | Format |
|---|---|
| India (cases) | Court name, bench, (year) case number — sourced from Indian Kanoon |
| India (statutes) | Act name, Section number — sourced from India Code |
| Canada | Neutral citation or court citation — sourced from CanLII |
Attribution requirements#
Indian Kanoon requires attribution on any content surfaced from their API. 8rney displays the Powered by Indian Kanoon badge on all Indian case law results in compliance with their terms.
The Indian Kanoon and India Code integrations retrieve live data at query time. Results reflect the current state of the database, not a snapshot. For critical matters, verify that the judgment or statute has not been updated since your query.
