Ambient agents
How 8rney runs delegated legal work in the background across web, desktop, mobile, Slack, Teams, email, and scheduled workflows
Ambient agents turn 8rney from a place you visit into a legal worker you can delegate to. You can start a task from the web app, Desk, mobile, Slack, Microsoft Teams, Gmail, Outlook, or a schedule. 8rney keeps working while you move on.
The core unit is an Agent Task. An Agent Task stores the instruction, autonomy level, approval ceiling, tool permissions, connected identity, live events, artifacts, and audit trail for a delegated piece of legal work.
What an ambient agent can do#
Run in the background
Start a task, leave the page, and come back to live status, approvals, artifacts, and the audit trail.
Use workspace context
Ground the task in a workspace, matter, document set, research thread, email chain, or channel thread.
Call tools safely
Route legal search, OCR, browser work, file operations, email, messaging, drafting, and document transforms through the 8rney tool broker.
Ask for approvals
Pause for user approval before sensitive actions, or run freely inside the authority you gave it.
Create artifacts
Produce memos, briefs, chronologies, tables, draft emails, browser captures, reports, redlines, and audit summaries.
Work across channels
Reply in Slack or Teams, create follow-up tasks from Gmail or Outlook, and keep the workspace record in sync.
The Agent Task lifecycle#
Delegate the work
Describe the outcome you want. Add matter context, files, recipients, deadline information, or channel thread context when useful.
Choose autonomy
Select the approval style and write the approval ceiling. 8rney shows the structured rules before the run starts.
Run the task
The worker leases the run, executes approved tool calls, records live events, and pauses when an approval is required.
Review outputs
Open artifacts, inspect the timeline, approve or deny pending actions, and continue the task with follow-up instructions.
Preserve the record
The task keeps a human-readable audit trail with tool decisions, approvals, external actions, identity mode, and final artifacts.
Example tasks#
| Ask | Where it can start | Typical output |
|---|---|---|
| Summarise this Slack thread and file the issues as work items | Slack | Thread summary, proposed tasks, approval cards |
| Prepare tomorrow morning's case brief report | Schedule | Daily report with matters, deadlines, research, and next actions |
| Review these contracts and extract indemnity positions | Web or Desk | Table, exceptions list, citations, draft recommendations |
| Draft a client update from this email chain | Gmail or Outlook | Draft email, risk notes, approval before send |
| Research this filing issue and capture sources | Web, mobile, or Teams | Cited research memo, browser captures, audit trail |
Ambient agents use 8rney's own runtime and channel adapters. Slack and Teams are entry points into the same Agent Task system used by the web app, Desk, mobile, and schedules.
