Library
Upload, organise, and search documents across matters and connected cloud storage
The Library is 8rney's central document layer. Every file you upload — and every file synced from Google Drive — lives here and is searchable by content, not just filename. The Library makes your documents available to the Research assistant, the Document editor, and the AI agent.
Uploading documents#
Drag and drop files onto the Library page, or click Upload. Supported formats:
- PDF (including scanned documents — OCR is applied automatically)
- DOCX
- TXT
Documents are parsed, chunked, and embedded within seconds of upload. Once indexed, they appear in the @ mention menu in the Research composer and are available to all AI features.
Folder structure#
The Library supports a folder hierarchy. Create folders to separate:
- Reusable firm-level resources (standard templates, playbooks, policy documents)
- Matter-specific source material (move this into the relevant matter as quickly as possible)
- Reference documents (external precedents, court forms, regulatory guidance)
Keep the top-level structure simple — three to five folders is usually sufficient. A clean filename is more useful than a perfect folder hierarchy.
AI tagging#
When a document is uploaded, 8rney automatically assigns tags based on the document content:
- Document type (contract, affidavit, brief, memo, statute)
- Jurisdiction
- Topic area (employment, IP, corporate, etc.)
Tags can be edited from the document detail view. Use Edit tags to bulk-edit tags across multiple documents.
Search#
The Library search bar searches across document content, not just filenames. Type a clause fragment, a party name, or a legal concept and the Library returns matching documents with a snippet showing where the term appears.

Summary generation#
Click Generate summary on any document to produce an AI summary covering: document type, parties, key dates, main obligations, and notable clauses. Summaries are cached — the second request for the same document is instant.
