Word Add-in
Research, draft, and redline inside Microsoft Word using 8rney without leaving Office
The 8rney Word Add-in brings the research and drafting capabilities of the web platform directly into Microsoft Word. You can ask legal questions, generate draft clauses, and redline a document without switching windows or copy-pasting between applications.
Installing the Add-in#
- Open Microsoft Word (desktop or online)
- Go to Insert → Add-ins → Get Add-ins
- Search for 8rney in the Office Add-ins store
- Click Add and follow the sign-in prompt
Alternatively, your IT administrator can deploy the add-in to your organisation using the Microsoft 365 admin centre.
What the Add-in can do#
Research
Ask legal questions from inside Word. The answer streams directly into the add-in panel — cite a case, explain a doctrine, or compare clause options without leaving the document.
Draft into document
Tell the AI what you want to add and it streams the generated text directly into your Word document at the cursor position.
Redline
Send the current document (or a selected passage) to the AI for a redline review. Suggested changes appear as tracked changes in Word.
Summarise
Ask the AI to summarise the current document or a selected section. The summary appears in the panel and can be inserted into the document.
Research mode#
In the add-in panel, switch to Research mode, type your question, and press Enter. The answer streams into the panel with citations. You can:
- Click Insert answer to paste the full research answer into the document at the cursor.
- Click any citation to open the source in a browser.
- Ask follow-up questions to refine the answer before inserting.
Draft mode#
In Draft mode:
- Position your cursor where you want the new text.
- Describe what you need: "Draft a force majeure clause for an Indian governing law contract" or "Add a representations section covering capacity, authority, and no-conflict".
- Click Generate — the text streams directly into your Word document as it is generated.
Redline mode#
In Redline mode:
- Select the text you want reviewed (or leave nothing selected to review the whole document).
- Describe what to check for: "Flag any clauses that deviate from market standard on liability" or "Review this against our standard NDA template".
- Click Review — the AI adds tracked changes to the document in Word's native format.
Redline suggestions are tracked changes in Word. Accept, reject, or modify them just like any normal tracked change — the AI does not make final decisions about your document.
Authentication#
The add-in authenticates using your 8rney account. Sign in once per device. Your session persists until you sign out or the token expires. All requests to the 8rney API are authenticated — the add-in does not send document content to any third party other than the 8rney API.
System requirements#
- Microsoft Word 2016 or later (desktop)
- Microsoft Word for the web
- An active 8rney account (any plan)
